History

1983

Sun Pharma was established with five psychiatry products and a two person marketing team. A compact manufacturing facility for tablets and capsules was set up at Vapi, Gujarat.

1987

Sales were rolled out nationwide.

1988

The first cardiology products were launched. Monotrate and Angizem are still sold today.

1989

Exports to neighbouring countries began and products in gastroenterology were introduced.

1991

Sun Pharma established its first research center, creating the base for strong product and process development enabling growth in the subsequent years

1994

This year Sun Pharma went public, in an issue that was oversubscribed 55 times

1995

The first API manufacturing plant was built in Panoli, Gujarat.

1996

An API plant at Ahmednagar was acquired from Knoll Pharma. Company sales spread to 24 countries.

1997

Sun purchased equity stakes in TDPL and MJ Pharma, as well as in the company's our first international acquisition, Detroit based Caraco Pharmaceutical Laboratories. A new research facility in Mumbai was set up.

1998

A basket of products were acquired from Natco Pharma. A new formulation plant in Silvassa commenced operations.

1999

This year Sun Pharma was ranked among the top 10 pharmaceutical companies in India. Milmet Labs and Gujarat Lyka Organics were acquired.

2000

Sun Pharma became the fifth largest Indian pharmaceutical company this year. Pradeep Drug Company was acquired.

2001

A new formulation plant was built in Dadra.

2004

A new formulation plant was built in Jammu. The first joint venture manufacturing unit, in Dhaka, Bangladesh was commissioned. Phlox Pharma and niche brands from Women's First Healthcare were acquired.

2005

Sun Pharma bought a plant in Bryan, Ohio, US and the business of ICN, Hungary from Valeant Pharma. Intellectual property and assets of Able Labs were bought from the US District Bankruptcy court in New Jersey.

2007

It was decided to demerge the research company into a separate entity Sun Pharma Advanced Research Company. This company is listed on the stock exchanges in India, the first pure research company to do so.

2008

Chattem Chemicals Inc. was acquired.

2010

Sun Pharma acquired controlling stake in Israel based Taro Pharmaceuticals, effectively doubling the company's US business.

2012

Two more acquisitions in the US were completed: Dusa Pharmaceuticals and the generic business of URL Pharmaceuticals.
